Expanded Research Collaboration with Magna Powertrain!

Congratulations to Dr. Kim, Magna Powertrain, and SMSD for their recently expanded research collaboration in ultra-high strength steels.  The new venture will explore “Automotive Weight Reduction through Nonlinear Finite Element Modeling, Fatigue Analysis, and Optimization of Hot Stamped Ultra-High Strength Steels”.  Look forward to exciting publications in the future.

Successful Masters Defense!

Congratulations to Jon Wong who has successfully defended his masters thesis, “Design Optimization of Aircraft Landing Gear Assembly Under Dynamic Loading“.  We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Jon over the past 2 years and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors.

5 New SMSD Members!

We have had an exciting fall, welcoming 5 new members to SMSD!  Wennian Yu will be joining the group a a Post Doctoral research fellow, Zuo Zhou is joining SMSD to pursue his PhD, and incoming Masters students Kevin Fritz, Patrick Kendall, and Bill Poldon will begin their graduate careers.  Welcome to everyone and we look forward to researching with you.

Teaching Award!

Congratulations to Dr. Kim, who received the Silver Wrench Award for the 2016-2017 academic year.  This award recognizes the professor who displays the most interest and enthusiasm towards Mechanical Engineering as chosen by the graduating year.

Research Excellence Award

Congratulations to Dr. Il Yong Kim for his outstanding collaborative research work over the past year.  The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has recognized him with a 2016 Research Excellence Award.

Teaching Assistant Award

Congratulations to Stephen Roper for being awarded the 2017 Brass Wrench.  Voted on by the graduating class, this award is given to the T.A. in the department of Mechanical Engineering who displayed the greatest contribution towards their work.  Keep up the great work Stephen, we look forward to another win next year.
