SMSD Presents Three Papers at WCCM-17

Members of the Structural and Multidisciplinary Systems Design (SMSD) Laboratory at Queen’s University presented three research papers at the 17th World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM-17), held in Munich, Germany, in July 2026.

The presentations included:

  • Il Yong Kim —
    Multi-Material and Multi-Joint Topology Optimization: A Key Milestone in the Development of Topology Optimization
  • Hansu Kim —
    Multi-Material Decomposition Optimization for Topology-Optimized Structures under Additive Manufacturing Constraints
  • Shayan Jalayer —
    Multi-Material Density-Based Thermo-Mechanical Topology Optimization via Coupled Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis

We are proud of Dr. Il Yong Kim, Hansu Kim, and Shayan Jalayer for representing the SMSD Laboratory at WCCM-17 and showcasing their latest research contributions.

ASSMO Young Scientist Award for Former SMSD Member

Congratulations to Dr. Hansu Kim, a former member of the SMSD Lab, on receiving the Young Scientist Award from the Asian Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ASSMO) at the Asian Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization 2026 (ACSMO 2026).

The award was presented in recognition of his outstanding presentation entitled “Multi-material Decomposition Optimization for Topology-optimized Structures Considering Additive Manufacturing Build Volume and Material Cost,” which was built on his research in SMSD under the supervision of Dr. Il Yong Kim.

RIINO Team Visits the SMSD Lab at Queen’s University

We were pleased to welcome the RIINO Team to the Structural and Multidisciplinary Systems Design (SMSD) Lab at Queen’s University for an on-site visit and project discussions.
The visit provided an opportunity to review ongoing research activities, exchange technical insights, and strengthen collaboration between RIINO and SMSD.
We look forward to continued collaboration and future achievements through our joint research and development efforts.

Faculty Appointment: Assistant Professor

Congratulations to Dr. Mengqian Sun, a former member of the SMSD Lab, who has been appointed as an Assistant Professor at Shenzhen Technology University.

Dr. Sun completed her PhD research as part of the SMSD group before continuing to develop her academic career. Her work during her time with SMSD contributed to the lab’s research in design optimization and related areas. SMSD would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Dr. Sun and wish her every success in this exciting new chapter of her career!

Yifan Shi Defends Thesis

Congratulations to Dr. Yifan Shi for successfully defending his PhD thesis, “Multi-Material Topology Optimization Incorporating Practical Considerations in Response Evaluation, Material Type Selection, and Dissimilar Material Joints.”

Yifan has been a great colleague, contributor, and friend to everyone in the SMSD Lab. Through his dedication and technical insight, he has made valuable contributions to the lab and its research.

The SMSD Lab wishes Yifan all the best as he moves on to the next chapter of his life and career. Good luck, Yifan!
